This is the off position but looking at the manual it should be rotated 180 degrees. I had it turned where run is up and ran out of gas. I switched to reserve and it still wouldn't start. Luckily the gas station was only a couple of blocks. I put 3 gal in a 2.9 gal tank and it fired right up.

It sounds like the knob is on wrong and should b rotated 180 degrees. But I think the knob is slotted and can only go on one way.

Take the knob off and see if the slot was maybe damaged and was installed wrong. It's held on with a small phillips screw.
