Default I think Im screwed!

I just bought my son a 93 Shadow 600 and it had some carb problems. I had a buddie tear it apart and work on the carbs. He was able to get them going. Then he found that the valves are burnt and the timing chains are loose and the crank case is full of gas. I know this was supose to be a project for me and the boy but I didnt plan on all of this. Funds are kinda low right now so Im not sure what I will need to do with it. I might just try to sell it as a parts bike and try to find something else for him. I have never worked on hondas and really dont know what Im doing on them. I can tear the top end off a harley in less than and hour but this is a whole lot different.
So what I am looking at is proably at least a valve job, new timing chains and what ever else they find. I hate to take it to the dealer cause I know they will rape me, been there done that. Any ideas would be great on this because I am really lost. My son was really pumped about this bike project but now he is pretty bummed about it. We had already been looking at it deciding how we were going to turn it into a bobber for him. So like I said any ideas would help or if someone is interested in it for parts I will sell the whole thing for what I paid for it. It has a clear title and I can take pics of whatever on it.
Thanks for the help
Joker

Don't be afraid of tearing into the motor just cause it's a metric. Motors are motors, they all work pretty much the same and have pretty much the same parts.

Used motors can be had in bike junk yards, dealers take trades all the time they don't want to mess with. and don't overlook ebay, yes ebay. Used and rebuilt motors show up there all the time.

Get a cheap manual, even a Clymer is better than nothing you'll be suprised at how easy you'll pick it up.

Turn this lemon into lemonade and have a blast with it.

How many miles are on the bike? Gas in the oil means bad valve seats (needles) in the carburators. Or an ignition problem and was cranked over a long time with no fire.. What is the condition of the machine, might be salavable.

The cleaning of the carb's may have already fixed the leaking float valve which filled the crankcase. Change the oil. Do a compression test to see if you need a rebuild. Get the service book to see how to adjust the timing chain. Don't write off the bike yet.

The bike is showing about 26,000 miles. The guy that is looking at it for me said that there was no way to adjust the timing chains and they looked real loose. He had put air to the cylinders and he could hear the air going pass the valve seats and said they looked burnt. I know the guy that I got it from had worked on the carbs and said it needed a air seat and jet but when my guy got into them he said the floats were way out of adjustment but are now ok. The bike has not ran in awhile so maybe it just need to be taken out and ran. Does anyone know if the timing chains are adjustable on these and if so, is there a link that shows how to do it?
Thanks
Joker

Thanks

I don't know about the 600 motor specficlly, but I've never heard of an adjustable timing chain on any motor. Doesn't mean the don't make them though.
