Default Prepare old center stand for painting

Hello,

I removed the center stand from my 750 this weekend because it was more brown than black. As you can imagine, 26 years of wear and tear have made it look kinda crappy. Its structually sound, but I want to clean all the gunk off of it (front cylinder dumps right on it, so its covered in blackness) as well as some oil that has accumulated. What is the best solution to wash it in to get this all off. And after that is done, I plan on lightly sanding the rust away before spraying it with some black aeosol paint. What do you think?

I think you would do better to get some of that rubberized spray bed liner stuff. I had painted the centerstand I had on my Valk with can paint and it chipped off fairly quickly. That rubberized coating will last pretty much forever and look good.

Can it be gotten cheaply? Also, do you just plug the holes with something so the sleeves fit back in later?

I wouldn't use regular spray paint. I used Eastwood Rust Encapsulator and Chassis Black, but if you're only doing the center stand that would be pretty expensive. Spray bedliner sounds like a pretty good idea.

Yea only doing the center stand at this time. Tank, fenders, etc already done. Last eason I used POR-15 to coat any rust on the frame, but eventually would like to paint the frame, but not this year. I have never seen the spray bedliner anywhere but will look. Can I spray it on just like paint?

You should be able to get it at your local auto parts store. Yes, it sprays on like paint...thick paint...but paint. You will want to keep it out of the mounting points and will have to clean out the spring holes when done.

Wow thanks for the bedliner idea! I cleaned and degreased the old stand today and gave it 2 coats of the spray on bedliner, and it looks great. I hit it a little too hard in one point and got a run, but its a hidden spot. Says it will take 72 hours to cure, so I am going to leave it hanging in the garage until the 80 degree weekend
