Default Adding Daytona Bars to 83’ VT750C

At the request of one of our members, I put together a step by step tutorial to do the bar change. I hope it is of use to others.

Adding Daytona Bars to 83’ VT750C

Parts

Bike master “Daytona” handlebars
$20 from Motorcycle Superstore
29.2” W, 5.36” rise, 3” pulback
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com...Handlebar.aspx

“Dog Bone” risers
3 ˝” c/c for 7/8” handlebars
#r-78-s
$38 from Rask Cycle
http://www.raskcycle.com/cgi-bin/car...ategory=Risers
(This was the only supplier I found for these risers. The design fit’s the situation. Traditional dog bones would not have fit.)

Round stock - 7/8” dia. X 6” lg. (Stainless)
$5 from Small Parts Inc.
http://www.smallparts.com/?gclid=CKy...FQOeFQod_jz3cg

Handle Bar Clamp (spare)
From Ebay
$5

Supplys

Acetone to help remove grips
White Lithium Grease for choke disc and throttle sleeve
Heavy Duty Zip-Ties for cables
PB Blaster to free up mounting bolts
Superglue Gel to remount grips
Thread anti-seize for clamp bolts
Electrical tape to bundle wires.

Tools

6 point sockets and wrenches
Hardened tip screwdrivers
6mm Hex Bit Socket for Bar Clamp Bolts
Allen Wrench set
Hacksaw and new blade.
Dremel and cutting wheel.

Most of the fasteners haven’t been loosened in 25 yrs.
You will need good tools to turn them.

Take pics of the stock bars to help you get the controls back at the right angle.

Cover the tank with a heavy blanket or towels.

Remove windscreen if equipped

Remove brake side hand grip (Use acetone if required)

Unbolt all controls

Remove bolt covers on handlebar clamp
.
Unbolt handlebar clamp. (Use 6mm hex socket and PB blaster.)
(Caution, hold onto bars while unbolting to protect tank.)

Slide throttle and choke disc off old bars.

Remove old bar end weights and reinstall in new bars
.
Unbolt tach and console.

Cut center section out of clamp with hacksaw

(Use masking tape to create a cut line so that the hacksaw doesn’t slip and mark up your parts.)

Slide Dog Bones onto bars and mounting bar (7/8 rd.).

Lightly clamp into place for fitting console.
(Bolted side of bottom riser clamp toward bottom for clearance.)

Cut away bottom edge of console to clear Dog Bones.

I used a Dremel cutting wheel here.

Reassemble console and tach.

Grease choke and slide on bars.

Grease bars on throttle side and assemble.

Snuggly tighten bars, risers and mounting bar (7/8 rd.)

Grind off locating tab on inside of throttle ass’y.

Install all controls to suit rider. (reference your pics for position.)

Secure wires etc. with tape and Zip-Ties

Reinstall left hand grip with glue.

Adjust controls as needed.

Tighten all bolts solidly.

Check clutch and brake switches for functionality
Connectors pop off easily.

Remount windshield if used.

Take it out and ride it like you stole it!

This awful pic of the ugliest biker on earth is to show that the lower bars do not produce any "reach" in riding posture.
Ok, now you can laugh!

Interesting look with the risers. I did mine without adding risers. Will have to think about adding them to my project. Thanks for the info...

Not as long as the center section of your new bars are wide enough to allow risers on the outside. The Daytonas are too narrow.

I am afraid you’re going to have some serious issues with your master cylinders being @ 45 deg angles before too long gonzalma. But to each his/her own.

Ouch!

As long as the inlet for the master cylinders are the low point, the air is at the high point, and the reservoirs are full, problems will result?

Here is a little addition to the mod. When I changed the bars, the angle of the mirror stems changed also. As you can see, the mirror stems tilt inward, pulling the mirrors in closer. I got a great view of my shoulder om the right side.

What I wanted was a set of mirrors with ball joints on both ends of the stems. I finally found a set on Ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MI15-...Q5fAccessories

Here is the installation:

The ball joints allow me to put the mirrors where I want. I like the stems, but may sub the mirrors for something higher quality. It was only $18 / pair plus shipping.
