Changing to the K&N probably caused the need to rejet more than the pipes. I've seen a lot of instances where people put aftermarket exhaust on a bike and just needed minor adjustment, then put a Uni or K&N on it and suddenly needed a jet kit. Same with the "ram air" intakes, forget what Kuryakin calls them. Hypercharger, I think.
On the flip side, I've seen people run K&N filters on a stock bike without even needing adjustment, but it's rare on Shadows as far as I've seen. And differences do exist between bikes, even if they're identical year, model, etc. My friend's '85 VT700C got worse mileage than mine and needed the filter cleaned more often, even though he lived in the city and I lived in the country. Mine needed just minor adjustments with a Uni filter and Sportster mufflers, but tended to run cooler than his. Bikes definitely have personalities. And for the person with the 800 that wants louder but not obnoxious, I'd definitely recommend Sportster-style slip-on bullet mufflers. Louder, better "rumble", but the cops won't be called when you come home at 2am. Little to no adjustment to the carbs necessary, and definitely don't need a rejet. Maybe half a turn out on the a/f screws. For the person with the 600 that started this thread, even with straight 2" pipes you're probably not going to be happy. The closest you're gonna get to what you want would probably be a 2-into-1 megaphone system with the baffles tossed, if you can find it. I had a Vance and Hines 4-into-1 on my GS750 that was missing the baffle when I got it, and neighbors five houses down knew when I was working on that bike. I like my bikes considerably louder than stock, but that exhaust annoyed the hell out of me. |
