Default Drill bit type for drilling holes in my exhaust baffle

Before I tear the baffles outta my exhaust, I wanted to drill some holes in them just to see what happens. My question is, are the baffles made out of a tough steel or are they thick? I was going to get a cobalt bit for the job, but wondered if I sharpened a HSS 1/2" bit with my Drill Doctor if it would be sufficient to do the job cleanly.

Default

Your High Speed Steel bit will work fine, but punch a hole with a smaller bit first. Maybe something on the order of .250"

The larger bit will bite better with a smaller pilot hole already in place.
