85 VT700 coolant overflow tank

Per the book, I am trying to add coolant to my overflow tank. Only the neck holds the coolant, about a tablepoon, any more just comes out of the overflow tube. It acts like something is stoppering up the bottom of the neck, it's hard to see. Nothing is going into the resevoir. Thanks. I am new to riding, and motorcycles.

Are you sure it's not already full? The plastic on these old bikes is hard to see through. I stick something flexible down through the top like a dip stick to check the level.

That is a good point. I have had the bike a month, and I previously was able to see the blue coolant at the "low"line. It appars to be bone dry now.

Does anyone think I may have done some damage with the small plastic funnel I put in the neck to add the coolant?

No but I do think there is something simple that you are overlooking.
I can't imagine at the moment what might be wrong......but something is not right.

The first few times I added coolant to my VT700C I had to remind myself to add ounces and not quarts to it. If you added coolant and it came right back out I would say that it's full. And I'm not sure what you mean about the small plastic funnel. Could you go into more detail abou that?

I used a small plastic funnel to add coolant to the fill spout-to keep it neat. When I shut the bike off, a small amount of coolant comes out of the overflow hose.

When I bought the bike, the previous owner gave me 3 bottles of coolant - that may have implied something.
