Default neutral safety switch

MY 94 SHADOW VLX 600 DOES NOTHING WHEN I TRY TO START IT USEING THE START BUTTON ALSO THE NEUTRAL LIGHT COMES ON WHEN I PULL THE CLUTCH IN. I HAVE INSTALLED A PUSH BUTTON ON THE STARTER RELAY + - TERMINALS AND IT STARTS AND RUNS BUT THE NEUTRAL LIGHT STILL COMES. COULD THE NEUTRAL SAFTY SWITCH CAUSE THIS? HOW CAN I TEST THE SWITCH?

The first thing you need to do is turn off your cap's,,, you can test the switch but yo will need a manual to find the wire color code, the wires are in the black tube that comes out of the side case but I think you will find that it is working because the light does come on, weather it working correctly is another story, it's controlled by the shift drum located behind the left side cover and there is only one way to get to it, pull the side cover. Check the clutch lever houseing to see if there is any wires coming out of it, you could have a switch that's worked by the clutch lever, if there is one disassemble the unit and check for damage, there's a plunge that tends to get eaten up because no one ever puts grease on it.

I'm sure others will chime in on this but please turn the caps off.

Welcome to HSN. Best place on the web for Shadows. Now, on to the questions at hand.

You have two issues here. Well, three actually. First is caps lock.

Second, you are mixing your two motorcycle issues. They are not related. A neutral safety switch (NSS) will not cut out the starter and then allow you to bump start the bike. The NSS cuts out the ignition also, so even a bump start wouldnt start a failed NSS, as the ignition wouldnt fire. That is why the bike should die if you put the kickstand down while the bike is in gear. You simply have a dead starter, for whatever reason.

Third, the neutral light when you pull in the clutch is due to a burned out diode. If you use the search link above, there are tons of links, some with pictures and how-tos.

You can tell if the starter is is bad or not by listening for a click when you push the start button. The click will come some somewhere under the seat. That click is the relay the activates the starter. If you hear that click, then you know that the bike isn't preventing itself from starting. That click means that the bike wants to crank the engine over. If you hear the click, then wither the starter relay is bad, or the starter itself. We can go from there it's that's the case.

If you don't hear a click, then the bike's safety systems are either preventing the bike from being able to start, or the starter relay is bad.

Welcome to the group.

Also, just as a notice, talk with the mods about changing your username if this bothers you. Most of the spammers out there poll for user names to send junk to, and if you use yours in a public place like this, your volume of Viagra ads will go through the roof.

I missed this in my original reply, sorry. You have isolated the issue to your starter relay. Either the relay is toast, or the relay coil ground isnt connected. My guess is the relay simply needs to be replaced. But why assume, when you can check? A couple of simple voltage checks should solve the problem. Specifically, make sure voltage reaches the coil when you press the start button. Then make sure the ground side of the coil is grounded. If both of these check out, you need to replace the relay. Else, we can go from there.

Let us know.

I think not.

I doubt that his "button" is actually applying power directly to the starter.
THAT would take a BIG button.

I think it is more likely that it is TRIGGERING the solenoid and, therefore would prove the problem is not there but farther back in the starting circuit.......like one of the safeties or the start button itself.

Tracing and fixing that maze of switches and relays can be a bear but a good shop should be able to do it for about the cost of one hour's labor......$75-$100.

I guess that would depend on which pins he jumped w/ the push button. If he jumped the coil, you're right, and we move on to other diagnostics.

However, a safety switch doesnt fly w/ me, since most of them, as I've said before, disable the ignition also. So, you could bypass and spin the starter, but the motor wouldnt run.

Guess we'll see.
