My 01 Sabre uses about twice that amount. It was even worse before I cleared the crankcase vent tube. Highway speeds (70+) are the worst.

Oil consumption

It's normal. I hope he's changed his oil before it got to 6400 miles.

Is it? My Spirit (06, about 20K) doesn't seem to burn any appreciable amount of oil between my 4-5K (on average) oil change. The motors are mostly the same with the exceptions of the transmissions, if I'm informed correctly.

This amount of oil consumtion is not bad. Honda engines can perform differently on verious kinds of oils. Case in point; I have two Honda Civics, a 2007' and a 2008'. I bought both new and the '07 has 58k while the the '08 has 47k on it. I have tried Mobil-One synthetic in each and they both use up to a quart of oil betwween 3k oil changes. If I run Honda dyno oil in them they stay full between changes.

My own 1998' Spirit would use oil between changes on Honda dyno oil but does not use a drop since I switched to Rotella synthetic.

I recomend that your freind try running different oil types in his bike until he finds one that it like the best.

Mine doesn't go through any at all for the most part, but some do and it's been my experience that those bikes that have their basic maintenance neglected or put off for extended periods are the ones that start burning it. I stick with a 3,000 mile oil change interval myself, it is cheap insurance and why keep dirty oil circulating throughout your engine for longer than that anyways? Unless you are running a synthetic that is.
