Hi,
I recently bought my first motorcycle, a 2004 Honda VT600CD, it has an O-ring drive chain, and the manual says to lubricate it every 500 miles. It says to use only SAE80 or 90 gear oil, and says not to use commercial chain lubricants because they "may contain solvents which could damage the rubber O-rings." I have a "Golden Spectro total tac synthetic Chain Lube" lying around, and it says it's "O-Ring Safe". But before I use it, I wanted to run this by this forum - is it a good idea to use this chain lube on my drive chain or should I stick to the recommended gear oil? Can it really damage my drive chain? Thanks a lot! P.S. Sorry for something that is probably a total newbie question, but, well, I am a newbie to this |

go to Home Depot and get some of this spray, it's a excellent lube for all chains, it's cheap, it stays on the chain and it works, you don't want to use any kind of a oil product, as the chain spins it will sling off the lube.

While lots of folks swear by the spray on wax lubes I used Honda spray lube on my first chain (Honda OEM O ring) and it didn't last very long. Replaced it with D.I.D. X ring and started using what D.I.D. specified ( 80-90W gear oil) and it is not showing any wear at all after 6000 mi. I've only had to adjust it once since new. It will sling a little oil off on the first ride after oiling but not much and only takes a minute to wipe off the rim. I think the trick on using gear oil is to apply it sparingly with a small brush and wipe it off. A lot of folks use way too much oil and that WILL make a mess. I don't think any of the available spray on chain lubes will damage the O rings but it doesn't seem to lube the chain as well as gear oil. I immediately noticed that it was easier to roll around the garage after using gear oil. It also "seems" to be a little quicker on acceleration too. Maybe I am just imagining things. I think if the chain and bike manufacturer both recommend gear oil they should know what works best. Most of the racing guys use gear oil. Oh yeah, welcome to the asylum man.
