Whats the best way to black out the pipes? Some paint but it seems to flake off.
I was watching some SOA and the pipes seemed to be wrapped in something? Crash

LOL dont try to spray paint them with high temp paint, tried and failed. The paint just came off after about 10 mins of riding, i ordered a header wrap kit last night. It comes with two- 2"-15' rolls of wrap, a can of the silicon treatment spray and about 15 of the steel bands. All for about $45

You can paint them, but it is a lot of work. Prep is everything. On my last bike, I painted the headers black and they held up for a few thousand miles before I sold it. There was no sign of the paint flaking.
Here's the procedure: 1. Remove all rust. I prefer Electrolytic Rust Removal . 2. Sanblast, or if you can't, sand with course sandpaper. Make sure you're wearing gloves. If anything is still shiny, sand some more. 3. Use your favorite prep. You can buy it at any auto parts store. Again, don't touch the metal with bare skin. 4. Spray with VHT Flameproof 5. Follow the curing directions on the can. I didn't have an oven that I could use (my wife would have killted me), so I used a heat gun on the inside of the header to heat it. 6. Install and finish curing. I don't remember the exact procedure. I think I ran the bike for 5 minutes and then let it cool. Repeat the process until fully cured. In other words, you can do it, but you have to prep and cure properly. |

I did the header wrap thing on my kaw.....black.....the black color faded after a few times the wrap go wet in the rain.....turned to a light gray....looked like crap....so I removed the wrap and the pipes never looked the same...you can tell it was wrapped....like the stuf imbedded itself into the chrome.
Also.....get ready for a steam bath when it rains and you are riding.....at a stop sign you will think the bike is overheating and ready to catch fire cause of the steam from the wet wraps... I also heard that the wrap causes the pipes to deteriorate faster because it traps in moisture against the pipes...
