Here is the deal. my bike decided a couple of months ago to start backfiring. I finally got to look at it and realized that the choke cable elbow tube that goes into the right carb had broken off.
Today, I replaced that and tried to start my bike. no go. My battery might be not fully charged so I am charging it up as we speak. However, located under the choke cable elbow, is a small nipple. The right side carb's nipple has a hole in it that blows out vapor when I try to start the bike. The left side's nipple does not have the hole. What gives?

The other issue is that at the top of my carbs is a plastic tube that connects both carbs. This ends in a rubber hose that snakes down the rear of my engine. It was just loose at the bottom, but it looks like it needs something in it or attached to something. The rubber is flared where it went over something. what does that go too?

It goes nowhere.... ok it does go somewhere, it goes down toward the bottom of the engine. It is a vent for the carbs and you do not want to plug it, pinch it or have it hanging out in the open (cause it will create a vacum as the wind rushes by it)

Can you take a pic or two and post them? We'll be able to help you out a lot better with pics. Like this:

Well, the good news is after a full night on the charger, the bike fired right up. I let it run for twenty or so minutes with periodic extended revs on the throttle. Tomorrow, I am putting the tank and covers back on and going for a spin. Here's hoping all is well.

Well, I rode it a while today. Idles great, accelerates poorly, but once it can open up, it goes well.
I suspect that my slow jet is clogged or restricted. I guess a good carb cleaning is in order. By the way, can a 1983 shadow get off of timing? I am trying to figure out why my bike pops and backfires so bad. I can even see flames shooting out of the exhaust sometimes.
