This morning, we were sitting reading the paper and drinking coffee, when I said lets ride to Quincy to eat lunch. Quincy, the way WE normally go, is about 70 miles/1.5 hours away. The idea at that time was to just ride down and back. Since it was only 0900 we decided to ride up to Antelope Lake, then down the back side to Taylorsville to get to Quincy around 1200. Decision made, Valk gassed, we were out the door by 0930 (I know that is really late to get out). So we maded it to Quincy about 1200. WE were just about done with lunch at Morning Thunder cafe, when we got talking about Bucks Lake. Since it was only 1230 or so, we decide that we would ride up and back then home. Off we went. At the Lake we stopped and walked down to the boat docks, water is kind of low. The road to the Lake splits, one is a fun curvey road the other is for large Motorhomes. I have never ridden the second road. So we head south of the lake where this road comes in. But at the "T" in the road, one going to Quincy, one going to Oroville. Another decision was made. We headed to Oroville. An enjoyable slow (lots of 25 mph curves) road. At Oroville we gassed up the Valk and headed up 70 to home. This time we did not vary from the planned route. Got home around 1700. Not a bad 270 mile/7.5 hour ride. Though there was some wind after Oroville, the real winds started blowing 20 minutes after we walked in the door. Got lucky.

Don't worry about the leaving @ 9:30 AM, by the time Frank would see that message it would be later afternoon and he would think you was just getting home from an early morning ride..........edit your post and remove arrival time, that will really scew up his mind.............

You guys are too funny. Ya took all the words out of my mouth. Leaves me nothing to say, but I wish I could have rode with ya.
The last time I cut across to Quincy form Oroville, it was a dirt logging road. (been a few years). The DW and I were covered with powder dirt. Most of the ride was under 25 mph due to all the pot holes. My front forks were air and all of it had leaked out at the start. But it made for a memorable ride. I have never forgot it and remember every dust particle and pot hole along the way. I never did see Bucks lake, but I did stop at a logging company named "Walkers Trucking" at the summit. When we arrived in Quincy we went to the Library and looked up my birth announcement. Went something like this, "the little giant weighed in at 12 pounds 12 ounces". I don't know if I still hold the record, but in 1947 I was the largest baby born in Plumas county. p.s. It just finished raining. It began about 1am and is now 3am |

The road from Oroville to Bucks Lake (162) is now paved, and for the most part has just been resurfaced. The "fun" road from Bucks Lake is in the process of being worked on. Had to zig/zag a bit. Not sure about the MotorHome way, haven't rode it yet. So Frank you need to make another trip up/down that road.
In a couple weeks, DW and I need to ride the La Porte road from Quincy. Yesterday I noticed a few Aspens trying to change colors. Eldorado wrote: Quote:

Sounds like you had a good time. I like being impromptu. I was at Bucks Lake this spring. Took Chico to Oroville. From Oroville took the back roads to Old Marysville Rd. across Boulard's Bar to Hwy49 through Downnieville up through Gold Lake then 89 to Quincy and down 162 to Oroville then home. It was a good ride. I'd say my favorite ride in my/our area is 49 from Grassvalley to Downnieville. The Yuba River with the smooth bolders and the clear almost blue waters are hard to beat no matter where you go.

Rob when you travel the Gold Lake Road again, make sure you go see Frazier Falls. Well worth the trip/walk to see it.
Here a photos of the Falls: ![]()
