Default Running hot?

First of all, today is one year since I bought the Shadow. YAAAY! Woohoo!

So I've recently changed the oil and gotten new front and rear tires (don't know if it's relevant, but there you go). It's getting warmer here and I've noticed the bike is starting to run hot... really hot. Within 30 minutes of normal riding it gets right up next to the red. Any extended highway riding and it's up in the red.

Yesterday I went out to lunch with the girl and some friends. She left her phone at home so I volunteered to run home and grab it (oh noes! More time on the bike!). On the way home I saw a guy on the side of the road sitting on the highway divider with his bike in front of him and his helmet on the side. I make it home, grab the phone and a bottle of water.

In order to get back to him I have to take the highway, turn around, and take the highway back. He had run out of gas and then killed his battery, already had a lift coming, so I dropped him the water, zipped up the highway, turned around, and zipped back. All this hard acceleration pushed the temp gauge deep into the red.

Only a few miles later I make it back to the restaurant, park, and notice a lovely trail of oil covering the exact path I just road. It looks like it all came out from the overflow, doesn't look like a busted valve or seal.

Checking the dip stick shows I'm still good on oil, the coolant reservoir had nothing, so I filled it back up to the fill line.

So.... any ideas?
