Spend a lot of time in practice, not just driving. By that I mean go to a vacant parking lot and practice panic stops, particularly stopping and turning simultaneously. You need to learn the limits of your bike, and you will be surprised on how far you can push it. You need to lock up the rear wheel in practice so you know what it's like in panic. You need to practice sharp turns and find out first hand that the bike is just fine when the footpegs scrape; otherwise you could freak if it happens unexpectedly.

Locking the front wheel is rare and difficult, I have never done it on dry pavement. Find some loose gravel and wet pavement and see how your bike handles under hard acceleration and braking on it.

I don't know what the laws are in NY but always wear a helmet if you are new, even if it is sweltering hot. You should have crash bars if not already.

Take the MSF (motorcycle safety foundation) basic rider course. Here's a link to New York's programs: New York State Motorcyclist Safety Program - NYSMSP - Motorcycle - Training
