Forward controls

I have a 1985 VT500C, however because of my height I feel a little cramped while riding longer distances (I drive about 45 min to work every day). I really enjoy the times on my ride when I can place my feet on the highway bars, and I was wondering if installing forward controls would help me feel a little more comfortable? Are there risks to doing this, things I should watch for, a kit that is better then the rest (don't mind spending the money if it is worth it). I'm really new to motorcycles but don't mind tinkering and doing the work myself. Any information would be a huge help!
