you are opening the the petcock, right?

I still do that, i'll get to riding (ine-c, what f?) and then put put put... (O_o).... look around wondering what happened, the look down in shame at the off petcock. this usually happens in traffic when i'm in front at the light.... end up crab walking the bike off the road and bouncing around to get the fuel going.
Don't change the oil until you get it running right. Changing the oil will not make it run any better. If you flood it out a few times, you will dilute the new oil with gas and have to change it again. Like I said, get it running good, then change oil and filter.

the bike is not dying on her, she feels loss of power and it tends to not like starting.

I suggested seafoam, new plugs, and filling battery. the oil was part of the self tune-up.

sidebar, I was out in Indiana a few months ago, in Indianapolis ... there were bikers that appeared in the middle of the city every night around 5. I'd never seen so many bikes in one place and with relatively no noise or public disorder.... madness.

There was a recall on the kill switch on the Gold Wing a few years back so it's not unheard of. I'm not real familiar with the shadow but on the Gold Wing there is a bank angel sensor, if that fails the bike will only start if you turn the bike off and on again. let us know what the shop finds.
Have you checked your fuel filter? If it gets plugged the fuel flow will stop and after a short time the junk will float to the bottom of the filter and the bike will run again, for a short time.

Default Solution to "power" problem

Ok, well, I did say I would come back when I had the solution. Bottom line, it was user error - yes, I am embarrassed.

Basically, when I added the couple of items to the battery that needed to work off the battery, I loosened a cable that supplies power to the something for the fuel (I don't have the sheet in front of me). It wasn't outright disconnected, but it wasn't properly connected either so it was arcing when I would throttle up or rev at a light.

Needless to say, now that the little cable is plugged back in, she works like a charm and I have my baby back (and I couldn't be happier).

I feel like a dork, but am happy that the issue was small and easy and not a big deal like the switch, electrical, or other unknown that would take forever to find and very deep pockets.

Thank you all! Becky (the dork)

Fun times...

I did something like that.... I could not tell the diff between my high beam light and neutral (old bike and words are long gone from the lights), madness and multiple acts of stupidity followed. then, the "ah ha" moment was pure shame.

charging your iphone aint so bad

Hey Becky, at least you have one side benefit...you have an honest shop. They could have sold you a whole raft of crap that "needed" to be done. That's helpful information right there.
