Hello Everyone,
Just signed up to your forum this evening. Looks like there are a lot of great tips from what I've seen so for. A lot of different opinions but honest one. I'm currently out of Toronto Canada and see that there are a few Canadians on boards as well. Looking to get some support on a purchase that I could be making by the end of the week. I tracked down a brand new 2012 Honda Shadow Aero with 0 Km. I personally have not seen the bike however pictures have been provided. It looks great but here is my question: 1) The dealer is located aprox 500km from me and will be delivering the bike when he's in the Toronto area aprox 4-5 weeks. 2) With regards to the bill of sale, he has asked to put down a $500 deposit (which is fine) 3) I'm looking to purchase extended warranty from Honda that he will provide at $450 60months. Is it worth it?. The dealer that I have purchased by bike from says his cost is $600 which Honda msrp is $829 (now tell me there isn't a mark up!) 4) I have had my M2 (Canadian equiv) for aprox a year and plan on getting my full M by the end of the summer 2013. Going from a 250 to 750 a good enough jump? I', 6ft 240 pounds. My goal is really to have the ability for longer rides on highway, possible USA rides and stretching it, riding down to Florida over a few day period. Is this far off? 5) I would have liked to have purchased my bike from the dealer I service at however there is a price gap of over $600 bucks. There is nothing they can do. Bottom price stands at $6750 + $600 for warranty plus tax. Buddy outside of town is giving it to me for $6400 + $450 warranty plus tax. I know that that sales person is pisst but the difference can go towards accessories. He has indicated that the 1st service can be done for $320 as opposed to $360 and that purchasing the bike generally means it will be serviced first before others. I have to respect that he is being honest. What are your thoughts? 6) I do have a Suzuki GZ250 that I currently have on sale on Kiwi but will not let it go since the season is over. I had purchased extended warranty until 2013 putting me a step ahead of the competition. The bike is perfect condition with some upgrades. Nothing childish but practical upgrades, saddle bags, backrest, GPS. The goal would be to offset my new purchase if plausible. 7) Finally, because I'm doing the sale over the phone, (checked out the dealer) what should I be looking for in the bill of sale? Can I verify something with Honda Canada to ensure this bike is new? My local dealer has indicated, this is being sold as a demo but with $0 Km. Confused. I would really appreciate comments on this since I don't believe this deal will last long. Out the door for a 2012 Honda Shadow Aero (ABS) I would be looking at 7740 with delivery. Is this a good deal? Your suggestions would be well received. Thanks in advanced... |

First of all welcome aboard.
I don't know if I've missed something in your post but you say the dealer is some 500 km from Toronto and you are concerned about the integrity of the bike and the sale? Personally I would never give anyone one penny until I have personally inspected the bike and secondly to make sure it actually exists. My opinion is that you are too trusting. For me the extra $600 might be worth it.

I see a problem with your situation. You want to save the 600 dollars by purchasing a vehicle from a place 500 KM away that you are purchasing the warranty from... So if something goes wrong during the warranty period, it is up to you to take the vehicle 500 KM to said location. I would spend the extra 600, see the bike myself, and know I can take it around the corner if something goes wrong.
BUT, welcome to the forum. A 750 should make you plenty happy. When I jumped on the 600 from my 250 Rebel, I was amazed at the power difference. I'm way used to it now, but the 750 should not disappoint.

Extended warranties are a suckers bet. However, $450 for a 5 year deal is pretty cheap. I'd want to know exactly what that covers, and also if any dealer will honor it.
If I was going to be buying from someone 500 k away I would still go look at/pick up the bike myself before I made the deal. The 750 will haul a 6' 240 lb guy around fine, but I don't think it's the best choice to ride from The Great White North to Florida.

If it's a Honda dealer I would think it would be okay. Get somehting in writing that deal is off if there is anything wrong with the bike. As far as warranty service with an extended warranty if it is a Honda warranty any dealer can service it. I would push the dealer near you first to see if they can come closer to the price from the other dealer.
