Had planned to drive up to Midland, TX for thanksgiving to my future in-law's place for thanksgiving. Unfortunately 40 miles into the trip, all plans went haywire as my bike all of a sudden lost complete power and I was able to safely pull over to the side of the road. Tried starting it again without any success.
Fortunately for me, my insurance policy covers tow and I was able to get it towed to my mechanic's place (just 10 miles down the road). He tested it this morning (after charging the battery overnight) and told me that the VR is shot. The battery seems to be running fine and putting out the right volts. 12.x off, 13.x at idle and 14.x at high rpm. I ordered a replacement VR this morning (wish I had read about the upgraded VR replacement from roadwarrior before). I have also been reading about a few other things with regards to this issue and I have a few questions and I am hoping ya'll can help me out. 1) Something about the plastic connectors / yellow wires from the 'strator' to the VR needs to be removed and the connections needs to be soldered. 2) Changing the yellow wires to 10 gauge. 3) At this point, I am also thinking of getting the battery replaced. What kind of battery would ya'll recommend. I want to get a battery with some additional power and CCA than the factory one. Been reading about the AGM battery at Walmart. Is this a good one? What about batteries from batteriesplus? 4) Last but not least, do I need to get the strator replaced as well? From what my mechanic told me, the strator seems to be working fine. TIA! BPP. |
