Default Possible problem or the Norm

Bought a 2010 Phantom back in August with 1800 miles. Now it's got about 4000 miles. Inside of exhaust is sooty, as in you can wipe black soot out on your fingertip , no trouble. Being how this bike is PGM fuel injected , is this normal ? gets around 50/52 MPG per my riding style. No noticeable issues with acceleration. Any suggestions ?

Heavy soot (carbon) can be an indicator of a problem. Note "can be". Light soot is normal. Many motorcyles today are built with some type of system that injects air into the exhaust. This helps unburnt fuel in the exhaust to burn more completely.

You'll find very little soot in exhausts with this system. The problem with this air jection system is that it promotes popping on decell, so many riders will disable it. I am not aware of Honda using this system on any of the Shadow line.

Opps, I ramble. Yes, your exhaust is probably normal.

Interesting. Is that on all, or just the Californication version?

The pair system is on my 08.

Here's a snapshot from a 2005 Aero 750 shop manual about the system.

Red area explains how it prevents popping on deceleration, but I've noticed a little bit of popping with the throttle
in the "just off idle" position while decelerating sometimes, only briefly.

I believe it's normal to a certain degree. Now, stop worrying, and go ride.

Laters.
