Please HELP! Would like to change out my 19" wheel for a 21" wheel but I am having no luck!! Can someone please help......do Anyone have any suggestions?? Where can I order one without breaking the bank or buying a "Harley" as I have been told over and over. Thanks in advance.
I believe the standard method to accomplish this is to get a vT750C2 21" rim and inner and outer spokes and lace it to your hub.
You will have to change the fender or rework the mounts.
Check for height and clearance when picking a tire.
There are at least two ways to get the 21" on the front. Simple and easy is to buy a C2 front wheel, flip it and you're done. Other is a HD 21", turn your axle down to .75" or swap to a 20cm bearing. Shim the brake caliper with washers and cut some custom spacers. I went the HD route front and back.
Can you recommend a specific wheel bearing you used? I have been going back and fourth and cannot figure out what 20cm bearing has the same OD and W needed for the HD rim
If you're changing to a 21" front wheel, won't you also have to change out the front fender to match? I don't think the 21" wheel will fit under the 19" fender, or will it?
I have 18x5.5 on the back. The front is easier than the back. You do lose the speedo but can make it work either on the front or move it to the back wheel. The back gets a little more difficult depend on on how you go about you brake set up and sprocket spacing as well as the axle spacers.
Thank you......I'm gonna try my luck! I'm a female so every time I call someone, I get a very short answer or no answer. This has been a great help. I'm going to see what I can find.
You should be able to find several how to's via Google or visit shadowriders.net, spiritworld or a couple of other sites.
Try different HD forums to find used take offs that people are selling, swap meets or eBay for spoke wheels or if you find a model of stock cast wheels search for them. There are deals out there even if from a salvage yard.
You can forget getting help from Harley shops. You might find help from a build who does all makes or is into metrics or customs. It is a build process that is always different depending on how you approach the swap.
That can also be easily done by changing to a CBR 600 or 900 wheel, with the brake caliper and bracket for it. Should bolt right up, though you might need to change 'spacers', but axle should be the same size.
They also have LOTS of other good 'mods' for the Spirit 750 bikes. I also suggest doing the '4 degree mod', and most folks change the clutch springs to higher tension while they're in there, at the same time. Check out the site. You'll probably like it and learn something too! :grin2:
You start by changing to a wheel with disc brakes. Center the wheel and make spacers. Determine how you are going to mount your brake caliper and adjust spacers accordingly if an axle mounted bracket which is what I used. Mount a master cylinder to the frame about where the oil fill is using 2 P clamps. Cut out a section of you brake rod so it connects to the push rod of the master cylinder. Measure and run a brake line to the caliper. Now would also be a good time to switch to a pressure brake switch for the brake light. Attach your brake fluid reservoir, mounting it higher than your caliper and master cylinder for easier bleeding. Now you need to align the sprocket on the wheel to true and inking with the front sprocket using and appropriate spacer. That's it!
Call to order caliper and bracket and no one seems to know exactly which caliper and bracket I need! Can you help me with this also? Where can I find caliper and bracket? What kind to order? Thanks
This is not a kit job. It is not a bolt on chrome do dad that has been designed and tested for mass production. You will be buying custom builder parts or parts from other bikes and brands to adapt to work. It can be done a number of different ways but the process is the same. I spent about a year reading all the write ups on how folks did the mod, asked questioned before I decided how I was going to do it. Not trying to discourage you but, you need to know there is not going to be a store to call and ask if such and such part will work for this application.
If you have done it already, search this mod on the Internet. The best places for information is shadow riders.net and the spiritworld. Both sites have just about gone silent as fewer shadows are chain drive and customizable.
What wheel are you going to use and what axle size? Do you plan to turn the axle down to .75" for a HD axle or switch to a Victory bearing inside a HD hub?
I used this part from Fab by Kevin. Single Caliper Rear Kits - Fab Kevin - Real steel motorcycle parts And one of his brake rods mounted to the stock brake rod mounting tab before making my own mounting point due to the wider wheel rubbing at times. Most went the HD mount because it was cheaper and made a slide for the caliper.
You can use the bracket I posted or similar if you go the route I did. Otherwise read these post. Many different ways of doing this mod. figure out which is best for you. These are all old post back to 2008 and before so do not bother posting questions as the OPs are likely long gone. Some photo links are also gone but the write ups give you an idea of what to do. There may be others but these will get you started and you cando the research for others. I can answer some questions and share my knowledge but up to you to do the research.
I think I pretty much have it figured it....I do have this question....Can I mount the new master cycylinder to the existing brake rod where it is connected to the smaller rod that use to run to the drum brake and then run the caliper hose to the master cylinder?
I can’t recommend one since that is not the route I went. I have heard that bearings for Victory’s work. Otherwise find a machine shop or bearing supply and give them the ID and OD of the bearing.
