hello folks, new to bikes

hi folks , as my title states I'm a new rider with only about 10 months of riding under my belt. I got so sick of rebuilding my classic mini and having nothing to enjoy right now so the solution was learning to ride and buying a 1994 vlx 600. Now I'm hooked! I haven't went near the poor mini in months.
But me being me I wanted to change the look of the bike after only two weeks of ownership. So the back got chopped and a nice solo seat was added along with new handlebars, side mount l plate, lights and paint.
Next came fiddling with the engine which has now got me in trouble and in need of advice. I replaced the stock filter with a foam ram air filter cut to fit. Also I removed the baffles from the exhaust. So on using the jetsrus website jet calculator I purchased a 120 main jet and 42 pilot jet. I also raised the needles by 1mm using two .5mm shims. All as per jetsrus recommendations. On first test drive the bike will not rev past 1/4 throttle. It seems to loose power just before 8 stroking. At least I think it is 8 stroking - like I said this is all new to me. I removed shims which made no difference. I replaced original pilots and again no difference. Could anyone offer any advice?

Welcome to the forum! You may try taping up some of that air filter to block some of the free flowing air. If it runs better, that would tell you that it is still lean.

Welcome to the form. Do you mean 8 stroking as in blubbering and loosing power from being too rich and loading up?
Your spark plugs should be a clue to rich or lean. If it is still rich after going to the factory jets, Maybe there is a high float level causing that. Or a choke problem after removing the carbs. Your spark plugs are your feed back.

How did it run before? Good idle and power?
Make sure your new air filter isn't deformed and sucking shut some how.

Welcome, you also might want to try some Lollipop's to replace a little of the back pressure you lost in removing the baffles.

and the 8 stroking I'm referring to is like machine gun sound along with zero power . In the next couple of days when I get some time I will check the plugs and do as suggested witth partially covering up the filter.

well what I did was cut out the paper filter and attach in a cut to size sheet of ram air foam filter. I had the carbs off three times swapping bits and the filter and carb all seemed fine on inspection each time. How would I tell if the float level was high and why would it suddenly go high? the bike ran fine before I changed the filter but I never rode it with the new filter on the old carb setup. I noticed that the main jet was 95 but according that jetsrus website these bike are supposed to be 115 standard? In a strong headwind I couldnt get over 120kph one day here so I suppose that would explain the small main jet. I did also have a lot of popping on deceleration - which i kinda liked to be honest! So all this led me to think I was on the lean side across the board.

I had the baffles removed prior to all this and the bike ran fine. I was getting popping on deceleration - which i kinda liked to be honest! Also in a strong headwind I couldnt get over 120kph. On changing the jets I discovered that the main jet was a 95 , but according to jetsrus website these bikes have 115 mains as standard - is that right? I just presumed the smaller then standard main was why I struggled for speed at the upper end and that I was just on the lean side across the board hence the upgrade to the slightly larger jets etc. Bit bummed that its all gone pete thong .
The non functioning bike is now parked up beside the half built mini - great. maybe i should pick up knitting.
