Looking for some suggestions on a throttle lock for my 2004 Spirit 1100. I've never had one on any of the three bikes I've owned. So I guess some of my questions would be...
Does anyone recommend against a throttle lock? If so, why?
Is this a DIY for a computer nerd like me, or should I pay someone to do it?
If the latter, what I should expect to pay?
Are there any brand/models that are better than others in terms of quality and/or safety?
I never had one in the olden days but the bike I have that I got from a friend has one on it. It works well on a long stretch and can be over come easily, but it still bugs me not being in complete control of the throttle with so many things to be aware of. Maybe out in the desert or plains it would be great. I used it only a few times and it was nice to relax my right arm for a short spell.
I know they're not for everyone. I've got a Vista which I used very seldom. Only when on long rides down the interstate, and then just for short periods of time. They're only good on flat terrain because unlike a real cruise control you'll lose speed uphill and gain on the downside, so you need to keep your hand on it anyway to maintain a constant speed.
The HD I picked up came with one. Same thing. Only good for flat, very flat terrain. Any up or down grade in the slightest would see a noticeable drop or increase in speed. Good for taking a moment to flex or shake out your throttle hand, but not much use as a cruise control if you are hitting even gradual slopes.
It was good on the HD for locking the throttle at a slightly higher idle for warm up. However, this one won't work with the Kuryakyn ISO grips I had added.
I used to want one. Now that I've had one. I won't bother with another.
I have a throttle lock on each one of my Sabre's, one is the vista style, the other one is called a "go cruise throttle control" , I actually like it better than the Vista, is a simple little piece off plastic, that slips onto grips, and you just hold throttle where you want it, then slide lever where it makes contact with front brake lever, and it hold throttle there, to disengage it, you turn throttle back to idle or off position and its disengaged. Its a simple principle how it work. I don't really use either one a lot, they start to drop speed after a bit, but I seem to use them after fueling up to lock throttle to reach back to make sure I put my wallet back in my right rear pocket LOL
I have a Brakeaway throttle lock (https://brakeawayproducts.com) and while it is not a cruise control as stated above, I enjoy it when on the highway for a long period of time. With the Brakeaway you can still adjust the throttle when engaged, so I find I get less hand fatigue if I am riding all day because I can relax my hand a little more. And it was pretty simple to put on, good directions and videos online. Just a few screws.
I got one at a local rally, but I think the guy's selling them on eBay now for about $25-30 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/201285066496?ssPageName=STRK:MESINDXX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1436.l2649). You tap the bottom drain hole of the switch housing, and it goes in there, pushing against the throttle sleeve, holding it in place, and it has an aluminum arm to make it easy to turn on/off. Had it on my Spirit 750 for years, but the material of the switch housing is a little thin, so it eventually wobbled loose. I'm going to insert a nut inside the switch housing to hold it in place better, but it's still a LOT cheaper than most of the others, and it looks like it's factory.
Look at SMW Project and get with Marko in Poland. They make an electromagnetic throttle lock. You set the speed manually, push a button, and hold at that speed. Any time you hit either the front or rear brake the system releases. There ia a video on YouTube that shows the product and installation. Marko Shalenko is the owner. The unit is better than the Breakaway units, and equivalent in price. The Polish name for the product is 'tempomat motocyklowy' or motorcycle cruise control. I have one on my 2001 Honda VT750DC since 2015. Works great. Go to: www.smwproject.com
