just came across a comment you left in another post about early 80s shadows. i myself have an 83 vt750.you said the most common problems are timing chain/tensioners and exhaust seal problems.i knew about the chain, the terrible ticking noise, and was hoping to work on it over the winter - installing a new chain tensioner. but on my drive back to montreal from the coast (antigonish) i had problems.
bike would lose power in one gear, then the next, then just drop in RPMs completely. at one point the cylinder head was spurting out oil. there was smoke and a faint smell of burnt plastic. i would give it a couple minutes and then get back on it.
by the time i got in the bike smelt like crap, the cylinder block around the exhaust port was a smoky golden brown, and there was still smoke coming out of somewhere. also the idle was higher than normal.
just wondering if you think i can save this bike, if these problems are familiar to you.
I know you have the round headlight. Do you know which parts of the wiring harness go through the bottom hole in the headlight bucket and which come through the center? I forgot to take a picture before I pulled it apart and now I'm fightin like hell to get it back together.
Sorry about the delay.. First I've seen of this spot.
Take off the caps, throw them in as well. Take out the carb slides with diaphrams. They shouldn't go in the bath. I take out all the jets and clean them alone in carb cleaner.
I want to clean my 83 750vt carbs and see that you have used the pinesol method. Do I put the complete carbs banks in the pinesol without disassembling anything?
I just saw a post of your pink honda shadow vt500. you mentioned in the post that you had put a round headlight from and '85 shadow on your bike. was there much fabrcation required to do the swap? I am thinking of swapping my rectangle headlight to a round one as well
