Hey Vic, the Skyline Drive and the BlueRidge Pkwy is basically a highway that is cut through the tops of the mountains and goes for over 1000 miles. The highest point that we road was at 6800 feet. You are pretty well looking down at the other mountains. There's tunnels cut into the mountains that you ride through that I liked a lot.
No worries about big trucks, you won't find any up there, just the occasional RV enjoying the scenery.
As for my bike this winter, I to do not ride. I am almost in the process of installing a HyperCharger I bought, along with a carb stage 3 re-jet, progressive front fork springs, and the list goes on.

The trip was amazing. We road about 570km each day which was a comfortable ride each day. We took the skyline drive, then the entire blue ridge Pkwy to get to the Tail of the Dragon. Riding there is the trip, the Tail is the final destination before heading home. I recommend riding when you go, as you will be disappointed your with a trailer and can't ride through so many scenic areas.
We enjoyed it so much we are going back again this year in June, but this time for about 10-12 days not 7. We will spend more time down at the Tail, and ride around that area more, stop at more places we sough but didn't stop to see last year.
    Can't wait.
