Your transmission is already damaged. That slip out of second gear into neutral was a common problem on old Honda V-4 Magnas, and was caused by a bent shifting fork.

I don't know where you got that 675 lb number. MCN gives the 1600 Classic weight as 744 lbs, and my '03 feels all of that. It's a nice bike in many ways, but agility is not one of its virtues....
