1993 Shadow VT1100 build thread

I figured I’d start a build thread to document the process. Not real sure how deep I’ll need to go or the extent of the build. These kind of projects seem to take on a life of their own as you move forward

Here’s what I have to start with.
Asking price was $400. I gave $300.
I figure at 300 bucks it’s worth a go. I already got her to fire but she wouldn’t stay running. But since she did fire off it was a good sign.

I also have the seats that are not torn and all the covers.

It’s a good start to a fun build.

MODERATOR:
If this is in the wrong place or not allowed I apologize.

So 1st problem is the drag bar. I ordered a buckhorn bar for it.
2. problems with the drag bar.
1....it hits the tank on full turn. Yep I could by riser extensions but I’d rather sit back vs forward in the seat.
And the controls don’t sit right on that bar due to the original bar was originally a tall bent bar that I’ve often called “wheelbarrow”.
Also The throttle grip is broken.
I need to find one that I like. Post your grips. Also the choke Seems to be part of that construction. It looks like there’s a sleeve that runs along side the throttle that allows me to choke It from the grip. I’m not sure because it was in a box. Any insight on this one? If I can’t figure this out I will run a manual choke just under the tank somewhere.

Regarding the choke / throttle grip...

If you have the stock controls, the throttle is a pretty standard 2-cable type (push-pull).

The choke is located on the left side grip housing.

I may have some take-off parts for your build, left over from my own build. Let me know what you need.

Here are some pics. Not sure why they're rotated 90 degrees.

I had to order a new throttle and controls off e-bay since the old cables were worn, the screws were missing, the throttle tube was broken etc.... I just decided that by the time I bought new grips, a new cable etc. I would be ahead of the game just finding a new assembly for 40 bucks. So now I wait for the stuff to come in. I think tonight I will start to remove the carbs for a good cleaning and get new plugs in her while waiting. Hopefully I can get everything by the weekend and get all of it out together and have her running by Sunday night. That's the plan.....Bwahhaaahhaaaa

Ran into a little snag that I’m hoping someone might know the answer to.
In the attached diagram I put an arrow at a t-fitting that seems to be missing on the vacuum system. Is there anything special about it? Is there check valves etc in it? Or can I just go get a t-fitting from ace hardware and throw it on? Looks like the PO took it off for some reason.
Thanks for any help.
