route question... Cape Cod -> putnum cty, NY

part of my ride next week will be going from Woods Hole, MA -> Putnum Cty, NY. This ride will be OFF hours. I really don't like riding 195 > 95 (along the coast). the alternative is heading inland 28 >485 > 90 > 84. Both slab routes. inland is only 10 miles longer.

any preference from people from this area?

Is time a factor? Do you want any scenery?

hi there. yes time is a factor unfortunately. i'm trying to squeeze ina few family/friend stops. i just know that 95 is about the worst road ever. i think 84 may be a bit better.

Hal,

I rode to Peekskill, which I believe is in Putnam County, on June 16th using 28/495>195>95 and didn't experience any problems, other than boredom and traffic as I neared NY. Oh, and the police presence on 195 has increased. Be aware that 28 and 495 are the same road - no exit. 28 just magically becomes 495 just east of the 195 exit .

Some days later, I was on 90 (the MA Turnpike) and 495, heading east in the pouring rain. The only problems were heavy/crazy traffic at the Rts. 90 and 84 interchange, the poor condition of 495 in places, and some paving work, including scarified pavement. 90 going through the Worcester area can be a tad bothersome too. If you use the pike route option, stop at the first gas/food rest stop about a mile from the toll booth and get your toll $ ready and stuffed in your glove. I find it saves time later.

Check the construction advisories on the MA Pike site http://www.masspike.com/travel/construction.html . There's always something going on.

Have a great trip, whichever way you choose to ride.

Terry

OK thanks Terry. good info. and thanks for the link. the good thing is i'm traveling "against the grain" of the bad traffic. SO I should be good to go. yeah those routes certainly won;t be visually exciting.

CORRECTION:

Where I've previously written Route 28, Read Route 25. You'll use 28 in Falmouth (Woods Hole) to get to the Bourne rotary, which connects directly to the Bourne bridge. Once you go over the bridge, that's where 25 begins, which becomes 495 a few miles up the road.

Sorry if I confused you. I was just driving that way today in my car and it occurred to me that I'd made that error.

You could take 28N to 44W (they cross in Middleboro, MA) and head out that way through MA, RI, CT. If you get a little pressed for time, then you can jump on 84 in CT somewhere along the way...probably best around Hartford, CT to avoid the city...and either get back onto 44 on the west side of Hartford, or stay on 84, both will take you into NY. Rt 44 is a nice ride.

all suggested routes are good ones, but if I had to make the trip and was tight on time, I would take:

-495N to MassPike west, (I90-toll road)
-I90 west to I91N
-I91N and then cross in NY

Have a safe trip.

hey that rt44 looks pretty nice. it'll ad 30 min to my ride, but it's actually the shortest distance. i may try that on my way back.
