How does this cover come off?

Hey guys, I am trying to troubleshoot the violent clunking when I try to start the bike, so I am trying to access the starter clutch, but to do that I have to remove this large cover to the right. I removed the one bolt on the bottom left but it will not budge. What else is holding it on?

Thanks

There is a “hairpin” on the upper rear side of the cover that must be pulled out. There may still be a bit of resistance but it should come off easily.

I don't know what a hairpin is, but if you go to partzilla.com and look up your bike, the attaching hardware should be shown in the diagrams.

Google “hairpin clip”. Then you can see a picture.

Item #4 at the following URL is holding your cover in place.

Thanks guys, it seems that part is broken. I did not force it but the aluminum ring was broken when I took it off.

So I took the starter off and connected it to the battery and it seems to spin okay. My theory is that under load the magnets get jammed up and that is the problem with the loud clunking and occasional seizing.

My problem now is I need to replace the green gasket but everywhere I look they sell you a bearing with the gasket for about $40. Does anybody know where I can buy just the gasket?

Thanks

#9 is available. Or # 2, I don't know your exact model so double check on that but a least you know you can get a gasket cheaper.

You should check out the one way starter clutch in back of the flywheel. If it is worn it can cause a slip and grab situation when cranking.
