Installed Samson pipes with baffles to my 97 Shadow 1100 ACE, K&N replacement air filter & took to a local shop to have carbs rejetted. The bike is running well ocassionally will pop out exaust but not often. I have tried to call shop all they will say is v-twins love gas.Best mileage is 38mpg drops to 30 or below over 60mph. IS JETTED TO RICH??
Any time you rejet, and INCREASE jet size, you increase fuel usage. If rejetting is due to the addition to something that increases horsepower, that uses more fuel as well. To me, anyway, 30 from 38 could be about normal.
The coloring of your plugs will indicate if it's jetted too rich, as will an exhaust gas analyzer in the tail pipe.
My other bike used to get 28 mpg. After the addition of a Power Commander, Slip-ons, gearing change and using the newly added HPs, I'm lucky to see 20 mpg........
I think the jetting is to rich. My VLX with stock jets and a V and H exhaust was getting 65 mpg. Now with a hypercharger and the recommended jets I think I'm getting about the same mileage but I need to put some more miles on to be sure. The bigger jets are to compensate for the increase in air flow and to help with drivability. If your mileage tanks with the same driving habits, you're way to rich. At least that's my opinion. I bet your plugs are black.
That right there is the key to this entire thread-very true
I will say my mileage tanked the first few fill-ups because I was heavy handed with the new setup......but once I settled back into my same driving habits the fuel mileage climbed right back up and beyond what I had ever experienced before.
