Post 3: LED Bulb Replacement

As a new rider I want to do everything I can to make myself more visible to the oblivious car drivers around here. It may be overkill, but I bought a Hi-Viz helmet and jacket. I want to investigate adding LED lights to a 2014 Aero to make them brighter. Are there replacement bulbs that pop in without having to make wiring changes? I saw something about adding "diodes". Are light bars worth adding? Do light bars use LEDs?

I'm going through all of that RIGHT NOW.

I can tell you no real reliable brand makes replacement LED bulbs for the signals/parking lights. Sylvania's the only name brand I'd trust. Their LED bulbs are nice and bright with one HUGE problem for us: they project backwards. The turn & parking lights have no reflectors bouncing the light back out - meaning putting that pricey bright LED bulb in there will effectively make your light dimmer.

The brake lamp has a reflector - I suggest swapping that one out.

I'm in the middle of installing two 6" LED light bars on the bike. Custom mounts/making my own wiring.

So no. Quick replacements are expensive/rare - But that means it's time to roll up those sleeves and do it ourselves! More fun that way.

Google the Opt7 bulb. Direct swap for the stock bulb.

Light bars are good, added lights are always good.

I just put some LED switchback bulbs in my front signal, they are white as running lights, then flash amber for turn signals. I bought a plug and play relay that prevents hyper flash.

On my VTX I have a Daymaker headlight, I’m sure it can be done on a Shadow with some $ and mods.

Thanks for the info.

I was just reading the VA inspection requirements and modifying the lights is apparently not allowed. They do say that LED bulbs can be used.

Welcome, add a couple of these lower down on each side and they'll see you coming.

Welcome.
I got a couple like these and mounted them down on a highway bar about front axle high. I read where the triangle shape of the front lights really helps get drivers attention instead of the normal 3 across driving lights on most bikes. Cheap enough and bright!

Does the OPT7 require any additional mods or is it plug n play? I'm thinking about getting it for my Shadow.

I have LED called Nighteye
https://www.ebay.de/i/132109395184?chn=ps
they are quite good, maybe not the best around, but much better than the old bulbs, and they fit into the original housing.
They are worth the money, and I can see better in the dark and cars can see me. When the housing is adjusted correctly, they don't glare.
You can't compare them with the older LED lamps, the nighteye are good qualit LEDs.
