Hey guys, friend of mine from work just picked up a sweet '06 Aero with 7500kms on it. She picked it up last night and it has been giving her trouble. It's sputtering and won't go past third without stalling. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but it's sounding like bad gas (the PO only put 100kms on it last year, and I doubt stabilizer was put in), perhaps mixed with a pinched line or bad fuel filter. To alleviate any missed maintenance issues, I am going to do the following:

Fresh oil change with Rotella 15-40
New ngk plugs
New fuel filter
Drain the tank and fill with seafoam and fresh fuel.

Anything else you can think of that would be causing this? Just sounds like a bike that wasn't maintained the way it should be.

Thanks

Check the state of the air filter too

Everything said above should fix the problem. Keep in mind that it might take a couple tanks full to completely clean out that crud. Just a thought, are you going with NGK Iridium? I recommend them highly over the standard plugs.

There is absolutely NO benefit of these even in a car, let alone on a low compression bike. Dont waste your money.

When you drain the tank, drain the float bowls at the same time. Does it just stall in 3rd, or at a particular rpm in any gear? Not sure if you have one, but maybe carb vent line turned into the wind?

Yup, sounds like the above should get you fixed up!

As far as Iridium plugs are concerned, dont waste the cash. They do absolutely nothing more than a regular set of NGK plugs for you. They have great marketing hype, thats about it.

Iridium plugs last longer so plugs are very beneficial...... on cars the pugs are near impossible to get to.
But on most the extra cost covers several sets of std plugs

My 2006 sat for a few years with gas in the tank and carbs that turned green. Does not take long for gas to go bad, however there won't be rust that quickly. Long story short, my jets were completely clogged up and not allowing fuel to flow.

If it's sat for one year with gas, maybe the jets are partially clogged? Might explain starting and running but not having power past 3rd.

The oil change, spark plugs, and new fuel filter are all good. I'd do them as well. But if it's still not running right after you try new gas and parts, consider popping the carbs off and open and cleaning out the jets with some fishing line. Worked for me!
