I just recently purchased a 86 shadow vt700 and it rode perfectly for 2 days straight. On the 3rd day of riding was in 6th gear going approximately 65 and it just quit out of nowhere. It shifts through all gears including neutral and the wheel will spin barely when in gear with clutch released but if i grab the wheel i can stop it easily. Does anyone have any ideas? Ive checked the final drive and shaft, they appear to be perfectly fine.

Did the clutch seem to be slipping at all before that?
Kinda weird that it suddenly slips completely.

Is it a hydraulic clutch?
Maybe the master cylinder has a lot of gunk in it and the bypass hole has plugged and not allowing the pressure to release inside. If it is not a hydraulic system forget the above idea. LOL

If it is cable does everything move and feel normal?

The wrong oil can cause it to slip....but to the point of stopping the wheel with your hand? That would be a first for me.

I say go the other way and check your clutch cable.....is it letting the clutch out all the way in the first place?

i'm going to check the oil next, when I get the chance
How are you going to check the oil to see if it's was the right stuff? Just change it along with the oil filter and work the clutch to rid it of the slippery non-conforming oil.
