Does anyone know if the black wire on the R/R is needed. the aftermarket parts people don't seem to know enough to explain it.

The black wire supplied switched power o an internal sensor in the rr. The new replacements are typically built with better quality parts, and are thus better rr's. The new replacements do not have this sensor, so the black wire is not needed

Well, the new ones have the sensor, but they pull the voltage for it off of the red wire, so the black wire isn't needed.

It will work!
