My bike was having charging issues and the connector between the stator and r/r was fried. We bought and installed the Honda sourced patch kit thinking that was the issue, however the output on the stator was still low, so I bought and installed a new Electrosport stator. The system is still only showing 12.7 when checking voltage at battery while running, so it appears the r/r is bad too (I believe it is original with 58K miles on the bike).

The issue we are running into is that when testing the wires on the black connector, the Haynes manual says that when checking voltage between the red/wht and green wires, that you should have no voltage, and that if you do have voltage, then there is a short in the connector. We are getting battery voltage on the test, but the connector is fine and shows no damage or wear at all. Any ideas what may be causing this?

Well, a free download of the shop manual answered my question. The real shop manual says to check for battery voltage, and if there is no voltage, to continue to next step. Not sure where Haynes got their info that says there should not be voltage!

That red/white wire should be the main output from the R/R to charge the batt.,and goes through the 30 amp. fuse .So it should always have batt. volt. as long as the fuse is intact.

There are so many things that could cause DC voltage to be lower than max when measured at the battery that it is impossible to state that the condition means a bad regulator/rectifier.

The battery is the most likely reason for low voltage measurements. Loose or corroded connections are next on the list. Poorly-wired accessory installations might be the cause. Corrosion at the fuse block is another. So is the very real possibility that there is nothing at all wrong -- 12.17 VDC at idle is not alarming at all from a stock Honda Shadow r/r. It should go up around ~3,000 RPM and maybe even drop at higher revs.

Any ideas what may be causing this?
You're relying on a second-rate manual and have a limited understanding of your bike's charging/electrical system or proper diagnostic testing of same.
