Runs rough, pops through carb. In cold weather.I have to run it with choke pulled all the way out. Carb is missing the hidden piece behind the stock air filter. It runs great in warm and hot weather. :-(

Normal. My 02 vlx was cold blooded. I wouldn't even take off until it would accept throttle with the choke off. It's just how she was. Ran like a top once warmed up. You ought to get the rest of the pieces for your bike. Welcome to the forum!

I think people under, lets say 35 are spoiled with vehicles having fuel injection. People over 40 remember vehicles having a naturally aspirated engine with a manual choke you had to pull out in order to start the engine. Then you pushed the choke slowly back in as the engine warmed up driving down the road.

Might be normal from the factory but it doesn't have to stay that way. Even with a lean jetted bike from the factory someone shouldn't have to run with the choke closed all the time. Sounds like a carb cleaning is in order as it sounds like a pilot and or main jet is partially plugged.

First I'd replace any of the airbox parts that are missing and see if that makes a difference. If not try opening up the mixture screw a little at a time and see if that helps at all. Keep in mind really anything past 3 turns out does nothing and most likely means a larger pilot jet is needed. Lastly, pull the carb and clean it if nothing else helps.

I've re-jetted the Rebel to get rid of a stumble when rolling on the throttle in cold weather, and cold naturedness. The VLX was re-jetted when I installed the V&H pipes to get rid of a slight popping on decel. Both bikes will start with slight choke no matter what the temps are, and could be ridden immediately. Might have to keep the rpm's up with a little throttle when it's cold out and stopped for a couple of miles, but they will run.

FYI - not even 36 and I learned to drive with an inline-6, manual choke & 3-on-the-tree. All are now considered theft deterrents by most people. I was once told I am "the only person on this planet" who can start my Econoline in under 30 seconds and that was from a vintage Shelby collector. And, to do you one better, the E100 had a broken choke cable, so you couldn't push the choke lever in while driving down the road, you had to let it warm up, pop the doghouse between the front seats, hold the casing (in front of the radiator) with one hand and push the lever with the other.

ZOINKS!

For your bike, yeah, probably want to start by connecting the air filter to the carbs. If you have a leak in front of the carbs and it's running OK during warm weather, my guess is the jets are already rich as they can get & the bike really isn't running "right" just "right for the current condition."
