Hey y’all,

I’ve joined to get some clarity as I’ve read that shadow’s are notorious for leaking gas either thru the petcock or overflow under the left side. I have had a 2022 Honda shadow phantom for 3 weeks, brand new. I love my bike, I just have 1 concern.
when I leave it outside when I’m at work and it’s over 90 degrees outside, it leaks a nice puddle under the over flow tube. Honda says it’s fine but if I were to let’s say, go to an event or wherever and leave it, if it catches fire on a cigarette or something that has fire, I’m assuming it would blow up because of the fumes and puddle. I don’t feel this is safe and there has to be an alternative to help. On my breaks I’d open the gas cap to get some air in it, doesn’t help. Ive read about float valves and in line fuel filters but I’m not a mechanic.
the bike only leaks when I’m leaving it outside for a long period of time (I work 12’s)
Any thoughts or recommendations I can do to help fix this problem?
Thanks in advance!

You have a fuel injection engine with no carbs so there is no overflow from carbs.

Try not to fill the gas tank more that 2/3 for a few days and see if the drip stops happening.
You may need to learn the sweet spot for a full tank in hot weather.
Usually just to the bottom of the pipe in the filler neck should be OK.

If it happens any time cool or wam then there is a problem.

Honda is correct. Carb wise, you be in the catbird seat, it's lovely FI. The FF'screw and petcocks are long gone. Back to the way the bike purges itself when air temp meet tank. Lucky it's only seasonal, this won't happen when the seasons change. Let's say what it's not:
Fuel pump - It shuts down give or take 40 some odd pounds of pressure behind the injector. No leak there, or you'd smell, get sprayed all over with it. So from tank to injector, the system is sealed off with all the hoses, their connections to the next jobber and so on is dry to the bone.
Injector - Sort of can't be this because of the loop from tank to injector. So basically saying, ain't a drop out of the injector system.
Tank - Can't be the tank itself meaning, from every hose off that tank to said next jobber or open hose to ground.

Where now to look for this leak is what I think is going on as per Honda says no problem.

Vapor canister - The tank is a closed loop emission type design. I suspect the event that is going on now with the heat of summer, the purge is to have that pressure escape to the canister. The canister fills up, in this type scenario, so as to act the safety switch once the canister fills up, meaning, it has to dump out of the drain hose.

If I could see the routing, or somewhere in the owner's manual, or a sticker on the bike showing an emissions routing system, say the one side of the canister receives vapor from the tank, and that vapor is cycled to the intake manifold is the loop. This is so the tank vapor no longer escapes to atmosphere, but is now captured in this loop, and the vapor is re-burned by this closed loop system.

Does it now make sense, seeing about 65 dollars worth sitting on the ground? And will your imagination happen in that exact scenario? You'd be more hit by lightening heading to those event than Marlboro Man tossing a butt.

a sweet spot? It hits shade for half the day but I’ll try the 2/3 filling the tank. Thanks for the input

So pretty much, that’s just how these Honda’s are. Fumes build up and I loose gas and it leaks from the bottom. Thanks for all the information, I appreciate it.

In the hot weather there can be venting of liquid gas from the fuel tank. The vent hose attaches to a nipple at the right rear of the tank, this nipple is connected to a tube (inside the tank) that runs up to what would be the upper most part of the tank (I assume when the bike is vertical). Where exactly the end of the tube is can vary from bike to bike (manufacturing variances)On hot day the air and gas expands and runs out the tube/hose vent. As Swifty said you need to find the “fill” sweet spot so this does not happen. I can fill my 2013 Phantoms tank higher than I can fill the wife’s 2014 Aero and they have the same tank.

Don’t know how long your commute is but it may work better to fuel close to work when you leave so that by the time you get back to work you have burned enough fuel that it will not leak.

Noted, thank you for the tip. I’m a new rider and it’s my first street bike so it just made me nervous. I appreciate the feed back

That is quite all right. If you were in a cooler climate, it would never have been an issue.

This is not what you want to see.

Dang Swifty, he is already concerned,,,
this cracked me up as I thought the same thing when I saw the pic.

It does seem like it would be the air/fuel expansion due to hot temps. It happened to me once but after reading about it in these very threads I was at ease and became mindful of the combination of temps and miles to go before she sits for a while.

I know physics are physics....but I wonder if the shape of the tank has anything to do with it. I live in a warmer climate than I used to...and haven't noticed that as an issue with my 09 Spirit.
I’m not sure. As Swifty said, I have to find a happy medium to have my tank filled so much or else it’ll leak more gas. When I filled it up last week and went to work, it leaked a nice puddle. When I have it at a half a tank, it doesn’t leak as much. I’m assuming it’s how it’s made to get rid of the fumes so it has to go thru the over flow.

At half a tank it should not leak at all. If you bought that bike new I think I would have the dealer look at it. If used you could use a mirror on a stick and see if you can see the tube inside the tank and about where the open end of it is. It should be to the right of the filler neck.

The only time mine has leaked is with less than 25 miles since filling up.

To me that just doesnt sound right.... new bike, you fill it up, ride and then a nice gas puddle when parked. I'd call the dealer immediately.

Believe me I kinda was freaked out too but Honda said that’s how the bikes are. When I have a half tank or less it doesn’t leak but it’s when I have a full tank it’ll leak when it’s hot. I got all my valves inspected and everything was fine.

Thanks for the input. I had honda check it out and all the valves are good. Just gotta watch when it’s hot outside and only fill it half way. It is what it is.

I hear you !!! My 2012 Honda shadow Spirit does the exact same thing I usually put a little cup under my vent tube to catch the fuel drips after a fill up I'm in Las vegas and it gets like 110-115 in the summer months .. its just cuz its hot outside .. just don't fill her all the way up and its good... no more drips ... fill only to the bottom of the filler neck like a half of a inch below the filler neck with fuel no more fuller when its hot outside
