As a newbie I have a question. a local has a '97 vt1000 that he says slips out of second gear. he pulled the engine out to fix and now want to sell the bike. Is this a difficult repair, and how do I know if that is truly the problem with the engine out of the bike?
thanks,

Sounds like BS and I would leave that one alone.

PS. There is no VT1000

slipping out of gear is often not an easy fix and can be hard to see the exact problem (bent selector fork, slightly worn part or shim in the wrong place)

It is a total engine strip to spit the cases... but if it was really cheap I would look, Second hand engine or gearbox might be a quicker fix if you can find one
