You can do it as often as you like. It only takes a glance at the front pad thickness, and the indicator on the rear wheel. (specs are in your manual) How many miles depends on each individual rider and how they use their brakes. Not sure what you're riding but I had to change fronts at about 10,500 miles on my 02 vlx. My spirit is pushing 10,000 now and both front and rears are still good. BTW, welcome to the zoo.
