Just ride it and don't worry about it. Just keep it properly cleaned and lubed and you can tell it's time for a new one when there is no more usable adjustment.

It really depends on your riding style and how you maintain the chain.
One of the biggest things that will shorten the service life of your chain would be over tightening it. Obviously, continuous jack-rabbit starts will shorten the chain life too.

If you're talking about a modern o-ring chain, keeping it clean is more important than lubricating as the o-rings are factory sealed with lubricant.
You should still lubricate it but less is better, don't overdo it.

With that said, I got about 25,000 miles out of my first chain. I've heard of some riders wearing them out as early as 10,000 miles.
