I know there are threads on this already but what the heck, here's one more on DIY handguards. For <$1.50.

Black plastic trash can from Dollar General, sawed in half, and 6 zipties - 3 on each side.

Before and after photos below.

Enjoy

Yes it would be interesting to see it from the riders side. I made some years ago with aluminum and lexan that attached to the mirror stems. With the zip ties how do you keep it from interfering with the controls?

Welcome.............

I am on the same page in a different book...
I used a satalite electronics cover from an old very large satalite dish, cut it in half and fastened it to the windshield bracket, sandwiched in ;)

Cut back a bit further for a better shape, those would make a perfect "form" for using carbon fiber cloth to make a pair of hand guards. I've made a few parts from carbon fiber for my racing bicycle and the "form" is the most important thing. DIY manufacturing with carbon cloth is very very easy and looks great when finished. You could make them easily and in numerous different colors.

I know I could lower my temperature threshold with those. Like Captain D said. Looks aint always everything! There really isnt any handgaurds that will look great on a cruiser with out going with a fairing. I'd ride with them.
Nice job.

Seriously, John. Don't toy around with us and just get to the point will ya? Tell us how you really feel.;)
Not trying to offend, just my opinion and you all know what they say about opinions..

I've seen plastic coke bottles cut down and used and lots of other things that all work but I don't like them, but to be honest I don't like fairings or even screens and I've still got a few lying in my garage..

I'm with you on this one John, so we know there are at least two opinions that possibly stink.......

If I wanted hand guards, for around 100 bucks, I'd rather go with these:

I dont either, but hit the back button instead of the Submit Reply button for fear of my post being construed as mean and nasty.

since y'all asked...

OK here's some more pics. First though, I almost thought that same comment about "I'd rather just have cold hands" myself. Mine & the satellite dish guards do look kinda fugly. But I also remember well the feeling of being miles from home and MISERABLE with frozen digits. At that point I'da given anything for some ugly a** hand guards. ha

So anyway, DISCLAIMER: I made these to be single-use, throw-away since I rarely take long winter rides. But me and some buddies from work are riding from ATL to ORL next weekend for a work conference and I don't have heated gear. So yeah... these are pretty crappy, but should suffice.

On both sides I just zip tied the trash can halves to whatever seemed sturdy to keep them from moving around, and I'm relying on the natural convex shape keep them rigid (no brackets or braces). Pics attached. NTOE: on picture L2, you actually can't see the zip tie but it's snuggly securing the plastic to the metail choke cable guide which seems really sturdy.

Oh yeah, Old Dad, forgot to answer your question: we have some really strong scissors that came with our set of Cutco knives years ago... they'll cut a penny into a copper spiral. Worked great on the trash can plastic.

And John Hopkins, I'm with ya on the screens. Can't stand looking through plastic and the buffeting gives me headaches every time no matter what shield or height I choose. I'm just gonna bundle up and go shield-free.

Well kudos on your ability to take criticism and understand not everyone will like something you like.

But, something functional is rarely pretty. I mean, you should see my face!
