In Just A Glance, A Close Encounter Of The Worst Kind.

Yesterday while riding some back roads of East Texas, Highway 47 in Van Zandt County. We were crossing the bridge at the Lake Tawakoni spillway and I glanced off, to my right, for a quick look at the spillway and when I looked back I was eye level and inches from a huge buzzard. I took a death grip on the handle bars, ducked to the right and missed contact by mere inches. Too bad my riding buddy following me didn't have a GoPro camera mounted on his helmet.
Moral of my story, NEVER take your eyes off the road in front of you.

Yeah.. Birds are fun alright! .. Had one fly under my front tire one time, had to duck a few times, but never any real close calls.

Glad you didn't take a beak to the forehead.. ;)
Glad you didn't lose your head!
Had a couple close calls worth birds as well. *******s!

Thanks. It would of been a beak to my helmet, I never ride without it.

Not a duck, a Turkey Buzzard and I ducked.
Hey Rocky, I've been riding FM roads between Plano/Allen and Lake Lavon recently. I keep finding road conditions that are absolute potential disasters for riders. Half a lane collapsed down six inches, deep chuck holes three feet wide. Not fun at sixty mph. Are you or any other Texas riders finding that kind of situation on our FM roads? Or is this a Collin county issue, and the rest of the state is good to go? What are the roads like at Lake Tawakoni?

I'd be willing to bet that this is a nation wide problem and not just in your area. The infrastructure in this great country is in serious need of repair. There are plenty of roads in this area that I WILL NOT ride a bike on. Its a shame. Rail road crossings around here are terrible also. CSX is responsible for keeping them up here. Every great once in a while they will attempt to "fix" one and it will be worse than it was before they "fixed it".

Wait till you do a road trip down to the hill country. There's plenty of bad roads everywhere.
Well that's sad Wolfenstein. That area is full of beautiful country and roads with hills and twisties. It should be the prime riding for Texas bikers. I love the drive from 281 north of San Antonio to Wimberly on 46, and that is a mere scratch on the surface of good riding in that area. The hill country is my dream ride someday.
A couple years ago I took my VTX1800 out for a test ride to compare the wind buffeting with and without the low windshield that came with the purchase. A crow flew out in front of me on the first pass with the windshield on, probably going about 100mph on a back road at the point of impact. Would've been a lot worse without the windshield!
