I noticed last fall my clutch wasn't grabbing until the very end of the throw of the clutch lever. I can adjust the free play properly, but still the clutch doesn't grab until almost all the way out. Went to put new clutch plates in but when I had the clutch apart I measured the old plates and found them to be well within spec. The metal plates were also fine. The bike is a 1996 1100 ACE with a cable activated clutch. Has anyone had this problem before?

Sounds normal to me. The slip to grab clutch friction zone on a motorcycle is a very short throw on the lever.

What kind of oil are yo using? That may have something to do with it slipping.

That's the nature of the beast. Don't worry about it if it's not slipping.
My clutch always grabbed at 3/4 or more from fully disengaged.

Thanks for the inpt guys. Painter, I'm using Honda oil, so hopefully that's not the problem. Ive just ordred a new cable, hopethat might help.

did you only do the handle bar adjustment?
there is another adjustment screw down on the case.

did you try that? that one actually adjusts the "throw"
you should be able to adjust the "take" closer to the beginning
of the "travel"

WOW! that is a tough one then. with all due respect to the other members
i dont buy "its the nature of the beast" you should be able to adjust where the clutch "takes" i can on my bike and all of the many bikes i have riden over the years. yours is a first!
