Looking for some advise here. I work in a machine shop we mostly deal with 6061 and 7075 aluminum. I can go with steel but i heard its hard to powder coat steal. So my question is, is 6061 study enough to be used as struts? 6061 is a lot cheaper than 7075.
You can powder coat anything that can be electricaly charged. Don't know where you heard that steel is hard to PC. If you are going to coat or chrome I would go with steel. 6061 should be fine, but it really depends on the design. You don't really need lateral strength, mostly up and down.
1/8 to 3/16 would be fine for steel. If you go Aluminium 3/16 would be minimum. Now you could start with a piece of 1/2 to 3/4" stock and machine something special. Remember, all you really need is, a couple semi-rigid strips, to hold the bike up, off the tire.
