Discovered a huge issue on my '83 Shadow 500...there's a couple sections of frame
that have rusted out...from the lower engine bolt attachment point under the radiator,
all the way to the swingarm has to be cut out & replaced or sleeved on both sides.
If I was a welder, I'd build a whole new frame, but having someone build it
would be too expensive. And really, to fix the sections on the bottom
half of the frame, engine/trans has to be pulled so all the rust can be addressed.

Also, the fork seals need replacing, needs rear shocks as well,
it has an electrical issue reguarding the brake light...and needs new tires.
Finally got in the rebuild kit for the front brake slave cylinder & the fork seals...
which are sitting as well while I figure out the frame thing.

The frame thing really makes it difficult...I can get another, but chances are
since they're all sitting in a junkyard that has no rain protection, they'll have
the same rust issues in the same locations.

Started contemplating Kit Car builds, only problem is there's no reverse gear.

It's really looking like it needs to be parted out. Which is horrible to think about.
Great running bike, just needs more skilled hands to fix it.

The only other thing I can think of is to use the engine as a boat motor...
since it has a lovely shaft drive, it wouldn't be too hard to stick it in a
pontoon setup...only thing it, I don't have a pontoon boat at this time.

So I'm a bit torn about what to do with it...any ideas??

Logically it has probably come to the end of the road unless you can find a rust free frame at the wreckers.
There might someone with a little used bike tucked in a garage or basement parked and out of the weather for decades.
It is sad, like pets you get attached to them, but they don't last forever, if they are enjoyed, 38 years is a good run.

The trouble with the VT500 is there is nothing else quite like it, to replace it.
I feel your sadness. )-:

I've dealt with Bores Cycle in the past and found them honest and willing to please.
