hey folks, I know this may sound weird. I'm trying to find out what size bolts hold the exhaust pipes. The dude I bought my 85 HS vt700c from didn't have the right bolts in. Sorry for askin a stupid question.

I just replaced the exhaust gaskets on my 1983 750 and the heads have 6mm studs and nuts with a 10mm hex. That may be the same as yours. They look almost like 1/4 inch diameter bolts, for comparison. But if yours are larger and look like 5/16 size bolts then they would be 8 mm studs, or maybe bolts. I hope nobody mickey moused them and put in US bolts.

Theres no stupid question. Most likely its 8x1.25 and should be a stud, not a bolt.

Sorry, missed the part where he said 6mm, which seems a bit small, but its a start.

thanks guys. Both bottom bolts are stud n nut. Tops are just bolts.
  • Is it supposed to be like that?
Negative .... probably the studs pulled out with when the nuts freezed on it and the PO said why not just use bolts. Some of my studs always seem to pull out when screwing them out with a socket on the nut.

thanks again folks. Now before I take these old bolts out, will I need to order gaskets? My dad said his HD RK doesn't have gaskets. Just wanted to make sure before I pulls them off. I've got to rewrap the pipes.
