You guys may have jumped the gun a bit on being hard on him... I've only been riding for a few years, but I have my gf on the back of my shadow every now and then. it sounds like they we're just goofing around a bit and he made a stupid rookie mistake, which everyone can say they do from time to time... Just make sure you get her the proper gear before you take her out on a ride, and my suggestion is to start in a parking lot and let her get used to the bike at slow speeds first.
