Hello fellow Shadow lovers…

I have a technical question regarding doing a handlebar swap. I’m hoping that someone else on here has run into this and could offer a simple solution.

A friend of mine has a 2001 Honda Shadow 750 Ace Deluxe that currently has the stock handlebars. We would like to swap it out for a 16” ape hanger. We thought that finding and buying the bar would be the easiest part, but we’re finding it to be difficult. We spoke to a JP Cycle representative briefly at a motorcycle show and we are convinced that we should get knurled handle bars. The stock risers are 4” apart on center. What we’re finding is that aftermarket knurled handle bars are either 3.5” or 4.75” on center.

So the question is two parts. Do any of you know where we could find 16” ape hangers with a knurled 4” center riser spread? Or do you think we could use knurled bars that are 3.5” or 4.75” on center? How might that look aesthetically?

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated!!

No help on finding the apes you're looking for.

As far as where they are knurled, either of the two you've found will have at least part of the knurl inside the risers. The only implication I can see is cosmetic, not function.

My 16" apes aren't knurled and I have no problems with the bars. I bought mine from www.Hellrisercustoms.com

There are tons of 1" handlebars on Ebay (and brand new too) Just about any shape and size you could want. Any Harley bars will work that are 1" diameter.

Hey I got my bars from socalpremier.com. You can find them on ebay also. When I ordered the bars ($80) I just told them what bike they were for and they knurled them before they sent them to me. It is a good idea to get your bars knurled. You might be able to get a local shop to knurl the bars for you after you get them (if they have the right tool). Or (I've never tried this but heard it works) you can use a hammer and a screw driver to create grooves in the bar where it will be mounted to the riser. This will give you a little better grip. Hope some of this helps. Check out socalpremeir.com though. They will get the bars to you knurled and drilled for internal wiring for a decent price.
