I'm a newbie to this forum and have bought a 2001 Shadow VLX. Am scheduled for the rider class. Buying armored clothes. Reading all the books. I used to ride in college 30 years ago.

What do you say to friends who are putting serious pressure on you for entering a sport they think is stupid and dangerous?

I usually say......"Preach your do-nothing philosphy to someone who gives a $hit"

Ok maybe that is a little harsh....

Seriously....I say "It's not the years in your life, it's the life in your years that really count"

"But it's so dangerous"

"True but I love to ride and it's the quality of life that is important to me not the quantity of life."

"But you could be seriously injured and a vegetable"

"So tell me, how is that different from your life?"

"What about your family?"

"I am sure they will get over it about 10 minutes after cashing in the insurance check."

There is an old biker 'saying' that goes something like this: " I want to come sliding sideways up to my grave, bruised, bleeding, and exhausted, saying......Wow that was a great ride!"

So I'm guessing your over 50. By this time you shouldn't care what other people think and they should know it. Go have some fun, the clock is ticking. 8)

What to say to friends

Loved your replies! Especially cbjr0256. lol

Yeah, i'm over 50 and the comments don't bother me. Just curious what you all would say. Maybe hoping for a statistic to back me up. Unfortunately, not many around that prove bikes are safer than cars.

I was trying to think of a metaphor to turn it back on them. Something like I own a gun that can be dangerous. Do you want to tell me I can't have one?

and i almost forgot... walking out your door any time of the day... we all take risks... the ones i take are just more fun to do

"Thanks for your concern. How's your drinking?"

"Yeah, I hear you. How's that cigarette?"

"Wow, dark spots... better see a skin specialist. That sun is harsh ya know. Is that a new mole?"

"wow, you're STILL taking that much cholesterol medicine?"

"Wait... you drive [name car]. Did you hear about the [check recalls/problems here] that killed 19 people?"

Fire with fire.

My mother’s brother was a preacher in Los Angeles and the worst person in the world about criticizing motorcycles and riders. Every time he was around, he told me how bad motorcycle people are and how dangerous motorcycles are. Actually, he criticized everyone.
He had a heart attack and died while mowing the lawn.

I just don’t understand why so many people risk their lives by engaging in a stupid and dangerous activity like mowing the lawn.

It's your life. and it's a risk all the time. A piano might fall out of a building, or lightning hit you, or a plane crash, or colon cancer like Tony Snow, or some little#### criminal that shoots you for $12. I feel more alive generally just thinking about the idea i bought a motorcycle when no one I knew had one. And...the girls like it!

My pastor and about 6 others in our church ride . Pastor rides a Harley. We are building a new 5 million dollar addition to our church . Last week he said , hey lets see how our bikes sound in the new building since its just slab and walls so we all rode around inside what is going to be the auditorium running the bikes . It was great :)

I think Hough brings up a statistic about how many more ppl die each year from accidents during surgeries than on a bike .
