I just picked up a 1983 Shadow 750 with running issues.
It puffs a little white out of the front cylinder, and seems to pop from the rear.
The front plugs were a nice amber, and the rear were a little black.
The crankcase vent hose pukes out a dark liquid(oil and water?)
I am suspecting head gaskets for the white smoke and crankcase vent and have them slated for replacement at the mechanics for the end of the month.
I am hoping that its stay at the shop will be uneventful andI won't get any surprise calls, but you never know.
I've ridden dirt and currently ride an '87 XL600R on the roads and off, maybe this bike will enable me to enjoy the highways a little more comfortably. KD

White smoke coming out of the exhaust means that water is getting into the combustion chamber, black smoke means that it is running too rich.

I would do a compression test on both cylinders before you do anything else.

The compression test is a good idea.
There's no black smoke, or blue, but the rear plugs looked black rather than the normal amber color.
It could be running rich on that carb.
It has 34000Km (21000Mi) so it probably needs a few things.
What is the average mileage before a rebuild is needed for these early ones? KD
